Classroom Use Terms
Effective September 7, 2026
Version PILCROW-CLASSROOM-USE-v1-2026-09-07 · in effect from September 7, 2026
These Classroom Use Terms apply only when a Pilcrow Work page or print view expressly says that classroom copying is permitted.
1. Permission granted
Pilcrow authorizes an Educator who lawfully accesses an eligible Work through Pilcrow to:
- print or photocopy the Work for students enrolled in the Educator’s own classes;
- provide a digital copy directly to those students through a closed school or classroom learning-management system or direct class email; and
- display the Work during instruction in those classes.
This permission is nonexclusive, nontransferable, royalty-free, and limited to noncommercial educational use in the Educator’s own courses.
2. Limits
This permission does not allow an Educator or student to:
- post the Work on a public website, public course page, social platform, or publicly accessible shared drive;
- distribute the Work outside the Educator’s own classes;
- sell the Work, include it in a paid anthology, or use it for commercial training;
- change, translate, abridge, adapt, or create a new version of the literary Work;
- remove the title, byline, copyright notice, Pilcrow source line, or classroom-use notice;
- upload the Work to a third-party AI system or use it to train or evaluate an AI model; or
- retain or reuse a copy after Pilcrow gives notice that rights have expired or the Work has been removed, except as allowed in Section 4.
A separate written permission from the copyright owner may allow uses not listed here.
3. Teaching materials
An Educator may copy, edit, reorder, and adapt Pilcrow discussion questions, background notes, activities, and writing prompts for the Educator’s own noncommercial classes. This permission does not extend to changing the literary Work itself or republishing the teaching materials for sale or public distribution.
4. Removal of a Work
If a Work is removed or its permission expires, do not make or distribute new copies. Copies lawfully provided before removal may continue to be used only for the class or academic term for which they were provided. They may not be newly shared with another class, Educator, school, or public audience.
5. Student privacy
Pilcrow does not require student accounts. Do not enter student names, rosters, contact details, grades, or student-level activity into Pilcrow. The Educator or school remains responsible for any copy kept in its own systems.
6. Questions and additional permission
Use the Pilcrow Contact page to report a permissions concern or request a use outside these Terms.
